KUCHING: A young Oriental Pied Hornbill and a flying lemur, two totally protected species in the state, have been surrendered to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).
The hornbill, named Joky, was rescued by army personnel Muhammad Abdullah during a fishing trip in Santubong last year.
The bird, which is about a year old, had apparently fallen into the river when it tried to fly.
Although he admitted that he would miss Joky, Muhammad, who is from Perak, said he had to surrender it to SFC as it was illegal to keep the bird as a pet.
Oriental Pied Hornbill is mostly black with a white belly and thighs as well as white accents around the eye, on the wings and tail as well as black-and-white plumage.
Protected species: Len Talif holding the flying lemur which was handed over to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation yesterday.
As for the two-month-old flying lemur, it was rescued by a school teacher, Ramlan Bujang, from a cable above the gate to his house at Kampung Pangkalan Kuap, Muara Tuang here.
SFC chief executive officer Datuk Len Talif Salleh, who received the animals, expressed his appreciation and gratitude to Muhammad and Ramlan; saying that their willingness to surrender the animals showed that society at large was now more aware of their responsibility to help conserve wildlife.
The animals will be rehabilitated and released back into the wild.
Joky is the second hornbill after Jerry to have been surrendered to the SFC.
